What Makes Yoga In India Stand Apart From The West?

Yoga has its roots in India and has been practiced there for thousands of years. The way yoga is practiced in India differs from the way it is practiced in the West in several ways. In India, yoga is seen as a spiritual practice that aims to connect the individual with their higher self or the divine. This emphasis on spirituality is often accompanied by a holistic approach to health and wellness, which includes physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of life.

The traditional practice of yoga is deeply ingrained in Indian culture, with an emphasis on the history and lineage of the practice. Yoga is often taught in a community setting, with experienced teachers who are respected members of the community. This provides a sense of social support and accountability that may be lacking in the West, where yoga classes are often seen as a solo practice. India has a wide range of yoga styles, each with its own unique approach and philosophy. In contrast, yoga in the West is often associated with a particular style, such as Hatha or Vinyasa, and may not incorporate the full range of traditional practices.

Overall, while yoga has become a global phenomenon, the way it is practiced in India is deeply rooted in its cultural and spiritual traditions. The West has adapted and evolved the practice in its unique way, but it remains distinct from its origins in India, emphasizing spirituality, holistic health, community, and a diversity of styles.

Positive: Professionalism, Quality I had an amazing month at the Kundalini Yoga Ashram, surrounded by beautiful people and learning from knowledgeable and trustworthy teachers/gurus. You will receive knowledge about practices that you can never get by self-study only. The schedule and kundalini practices (for the kundalini yoga teacher training) were intense and demanding full devotion. But on the other hand we also had a lot of fun, celebrating birthdays, Christmas, going for Sunday trips. Like one big kundalini yoga family I warmly recommend to visit this Ashram.
